Niagara Falls

By February 23, 2017 General

Niagara Falls straddles the international border between Canada and the United States.  To be more specific it is between the province of Ontario, Canada and the state of New York, USA. They form the southern end of the Niagara Gorge.

There are three waterfalls, the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls.

The Horseshoe Falls border the United States (New York State) and Canada (Province of Ontario).  The American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls are both in the United States.

The International boundary line was drawn through the Horseshoe Falls in 1819, but the boundary has been disputed due to the erosion and construction on Goat Island.

The Falls are located on the Niagara River, which drains both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

The Falls have a vertical drop of more than 165 feet.  When taken into account, all three of the Falls, have the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world.

Here are a few things to do when visiting Niagara Falls.

  1. Maid of the Mist
  2. Niagara Gorge Trail
  3. Skylon Tower Observation Deck.  This is on the Canadian Side of the Falls.

If you are visiting on the Canadian side of the Falls you can take the Maid of the Mist boat ride and you will want to have an evening meal in the Skylon Tower and enjoy the Falls all lit up.

On our drive to Duluth Minnesota from St. Cloud, we went thru some of the most scenic farmlands.  We arrived in Duluth in the early afternoon it was about two and half hours from St. Cloud and checked into our hotel.  Our Hotel was on Lake Superior, which gave us the opportunity to take a nice walk along the Canal Park Drive.  We spent four days in Duluth, enjoying the North Shore Drive along Lake Superior, doing some hiking, and biking.  We also enjoyed some of the many good restaurants in the area.  One restaurant that was recommended to us  was about 20 minutes north on the Shore Drive known as the Scenic Café, it overlooks Lake Superior and has amazing cuisine.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn, Overlooks Lake Superior and has the Lake walk right on the beach.  We had beautiful weather while we were there.  We spent two nights at the Hampton.  A third night at the South Pier Inn on the Canal.

We arrived at the Park on Saturday September 15, 2015 it was raining and cold.  After checking into the Hotel, we decided to take a walk around town, and checked out some of the restaurants.  The next day we got up to explore the park it was raining but we did not let that deter us from going in and having a good time.  We saw some of the Wild life, lots of Bison, Mule Deer and Pronghorn.  In the water streams, we would see groups of Otters swimming together.  When we entered the park, we headed south towards Old Faithful stopping on the way to see, The Great Fountain Geyser, Grand Prismatic Spring, Black Sand Basin and then Old Faithful.  We also did some of the off shoots to see the waterfalls and gorges these were a little scary being only one care width and one-way only.

Town of Madison

The Hot Springs.

Some of the falls and gorges.

Old Faithful Geyser

Next day we entered the park and headed north towards Mammoth Hot Springs.  When we reached the Norris Geyser Basin, we decided to change our direction and head towards Canyon Village and then to Tower-Roosevelt.  We would then go on to Mammoth Hot Springs.  We passed Canyon Village and as we made our way towards Tower-Roosevelt at about an elevation of 9000 ft., it started to snow and heavily.  We then made the decision to go back to Norris Geyser Basin and head to Mammoth Hot Springs.

Mammoth Springs

On our way towards leaving the park, we stopped at the Albright Visitor Center.  As we were going to our car, we stopped and looked across the street at the park headquarters to see a number of Mule Deer just lying around and enjoying the human crowed who were taking pictures of them.

Leaving the park we went thru the town of Gardiner

North to Lacey Washington

By February 5, 2017 General

Leaving Yosemite National Park, heading towards Washington State we passed thru Northern California enjoying the scenery of the Cascade Mountain Range.  The first mountain we pass was Mount Shasta, standing at 14,162 feet high although it was a clear beautiful day; the view of the mountain was limited because of the smoke from the California wild fires. (See picture below)  We stopped at a roadside rest area to admire the view and take some pictures of the mountain.

Continuing on to Lacey, Washington, we passed thru Oregon State where we plan to return to Portland and spend time with family later in our trip.  Just like our travel thru California, the mountain scenery was just as beautiful.  As we neared Portland, we could see Mount Hood, standing at 11,230 ft. high, another of the tall mountains in the Cascade Mountain Range.

Crossing over the Columbia River into Washington State, we continued on where we passed a more famous mountain in the Cascade Range Mount St. Helen.  On May 18, 1980, America and the world saw the eruption of Mt. St. Helen.  This was the first major volcanic eruption since that of Mount Lassen Peak, California, which occurred in 1915.

Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park was a must see for us on our West Coast trip around the country.  With tall pine trees, granite monoliths and rippling meadow grasses it is one of the wonders of the natural world.  Driving to the park and viewing the scenery was just aw inspiring.

You need a few days in the park to enjoy the streams, rock formations, waterfalls and the wild life that abounds there.  There are over 800 hiking trails for both the novice and then for the more advance individuals.  You can take the easy half mile stroll on the valley floor or around the giant sequoia trees.  The more advanced hikers is the top of the Half Dome trail a 17 mile round trip hike.

When visiting the park we went to the Majestic Mountain Lodge and had lunch in the large dinning room with an excellent view outside.  There is also outside dinning for you scenic pleasure.

There are many places to eat and sleep within the park you can see the list at the official park site (

Hotels and Restaurants

On our trip we worked as a team in planning out the day’s events and the distance we would drive.

Using the Road Atlas we would highlight the route that would take us to the park we chose to visit.

As I drove my wife would be the navigator, she kept us on the correct path. In the evening we would plan out our next day’s adventure, again using our atlas to highlight our route and keep the navigator alert.

We chose our favorite hotel chain to take advantage of the points (for the free nights!) throughout our trip.  This of course did not stop us from staying with family and friends.

Some Helpful tips:

  • Take advantage of the Hotel breakfasts and be sure to take along some yogurts and fresh fruits for those long drives.
  • Check with the Hotel clerks for the best restaurant in town, (the one the locals go to) make sure to ask if you need reservations.
  • If you have not gone to a National Park, at the first park you go to make sure you sign up for the Lifetime Pass for U.S. Citizens 62 and older.
